Show your Spirit on National Margarita Day with this Bloody Good Version

Hardly a week goes by without being reminded on your many feeds that it is National (insert food) Holiday. Some of these celebrations are strange but probably made sense in 1983 (looking at you, pecan sandies, shrimp scampi, and animal crackers) while others should be considered as holy as Christmas. The best example of the latter (next to tater tot day) is NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY! Margaritas are the perfect cocktail to sip on a sunny patio, at a bumpin’ BBQ, or even in your underwear while watching reruns of The Golden Girls.
For this cocktail, we wanted to take the flavors beyond the classic version and jazz it up--no, not with Zatarain’s although their jambalaya mix is the shizz--but with our favorite winter citrus, the blood orange, which will be in season until late Spring. The sweet citrus flavor and rubine hue of the blood orange juice combines with fresh-squeezed lime juice, agave syrup, orange liqueur, and (of course) tequila or mezcal to create a delicious beverage worth celebrating any day of the year.
2 Ounces Tequila or Mezcal
1/2 Ounce Orange Liqueur
3/4 Ounce Blood Orange Juice
1/4 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 Ounce Agave Syrup (Simple Syrup Optional)
Salt for Rim
Double Rocks / Old Fashioned Glass
Blood Orange Wheel for Garnish
1. Moisten glass rim and coat with salt.
2. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
3. Add ice and shake until chilled.
4. Strain into double rocks / Old Fashioned glass over ice.
5. Garnish with blood orange wheel.
